How does Ventolin work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?
Ventolin contains the active ingredient Salbutamol which is selective 2-adrenoceptor agonist. In therapeutic doses it acts on the 2-adrenergic receptors of bronchial smooth muscle, providing little or no effect on the 1-adrenergic receptors of heart tissue. It possesses bronchodilatory effect, preventing bronchospasm, reduces airway resistance, increases lung capacity and mucociliary clearance (in case of chronic bronchitis), stimulates mucus secretion, activates the function of ciliated epithelium.
In recommended therapeutic doses has no negative effect on the cardiovascular system, does not cause increase blood pressure, causes dilation of the coronary arteries.
Which conditions are treated with Ventolin?
Ventolin inhaler or tablets are used to treat or prevent airways spasms (bronchospasms). Bronchospasm are most common in people with asthma, allergic bronchitis, emphysema, people with heart diseases and hypertension.
Ventolin tablets can also be used by women to prevent premature labor. However, only your doctor may prescribe you this medication.
What should a patient know before using Ventolin?
The Ventolin should not be used in cases of:
- Ischemic heart disease (coronary heart disease)
- Heart failure
- Heart defects, aortic stenosis,
- Decompensated diabetes mellitus
- Hepatic or renal insufficiency
- Pregnancy (especially first trimester)
- Miscarriage threat in I and II trimester of pregnancy.
Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?
The side effects of Ventolin include:
Allergic reactions: hypersensitivity reactions, including urticaria, angioedema, bronchospasm, hypotension and collapse.
CNS: tremor, headache, hyperactivity.
Cardiovascular system: tachycardia, palpitations (throbbing, palpitation), increased peripheral vascular disease, arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia and extrasystoles.
Respiratory system: paradoxical bronchospasm.
Digestive system: irritation of the mucous membranes of the mouth and pharynx.
Musculoskeletal system: muscle cramps.
Metabolism: hypokalemia, lactic acidosis.

Which groups of drugs or specific preparations may interact with Ventolin?
The drug is affected by the following:
- Beta blockers
- Cardiac glycosides (digoxin)
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors
- Tricyclic antidepressants
